Leveson schetst voor studenten de ‘nieuwe’ journalistiek: bloggers, dat is. Hun intrede in het publieke debat heeft dat debat verbeterd, maar zet ook bestaande (media)belangen onder druk. ‘Although potentially causing damage to the business model for the press, in morethan one sense, blogging adds to free speech and is not necessarily a bad thing’, hield hij studenten in Melbourne voor.
‘Indeed, in his recent book The Rise of the Fifth Estate the former public servant Greg Jericho, who came to prominence entirely through his political commentaryon the Grog’s Gamut blog, asserts that the best bloggers provide comment andanalysis every bit as good as that found in mainstream media, and in some cases better.’ Dat laatste is een wat lastige claim, zo niet-onderbouwd en nogal stellig gebracht. Maar dat bloggers de nieuwe theehuizen van de 21ste eeuw zijn, moge duidelijk zijn.
Een aspect is bijzonder interessant uit de mond van Leveson te horen: ‘[Greg Jericho] also argues that those active on social media act as “watchdogs” on themainstream journalists, fact checking, arguing and calling to account in a fashionnot possible only a very short while ago.’ Gelooft Leveson Jericho? Dan is de pers haar eigen waakhond. Maar helaas, Leveson heeft weinig vertrouwen in die rol van de pers-richting-pers. Daarom wil hij externe toezichthouders. <<
